About the founder

Gary C. Puls
Gary C. PulsCEO and Founder
Gary understands and thrives on the dynamics of a courtroom. His innate ability to adapt to any situation, overcome any obstacle, and communicate at any level has proven to be an invaluable asset on every trial team he has been associated with.

Professional Highlights

Naval Career
Gary entered the legal industry following a very successful twenty year career with the United States Navy. As a naval aviation maintenance manager he specialized in making the impossible happen on a regular basis. Trained in avionics systems, with his specialty in the Navy’s F-14 (Top Gun) radar guided weapons systems, he was quickly promoted. He was hand-selected to mange aircraft repair on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S Ranger during combat operations in Operation Desert Storm. His efforts set new records in aircraft combat readiness and earned him the prestigious Navy Commendation Medal.

IT Management
During the latter half of his naval career personal computers came on the seen. He immediately recognized their potential and volunteered to manage his command’s IT program, collateral to his normal duties, and retained this position for the duration of his career. During this time he learned every aspect of personal computing; every operating system from DOS to Windows XP; PC upgrade, maintenance and repair. When NAS Miramar decided to automate aircraft maintenance documentation he was chosen to lead a team of over 50 personnel to train 1200 people; manage the installation of a fiber optic Local Area Network (LAN) throughout ten buildings and install over 150 operator terminals. After completing the transition he was requested to stay on and manage the program as Database Administrator. His efforts were lauded by the Commander of Naval Air Forces Pacific Fleet as the most successful installation ever completed.
inData Career

In August 1996 he met Mr. Brent Sandstrom, CEO of inData Corporation, while hosting him on board the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk for a three-day cruise from Seattle, WA to San Diego, CA. During this time Mr. Sandstrom recognized Gary would be an asset to his company and offered him a position at inData. After Gary’s retirement in 1999 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (Air Warfare Specialist), he accepted Mr. Sandstrom’s offer and began his career in the legal industry as an inData Trial Consultant.

Gary’s abilities were immediately demonstrated as, during his second week at inData he was assigned to support a three month trial in Tulsa, OK involving over a billion dollars in damages. During the course of the trial, which involved over a million pages of documents, graphics and animations and over 200 video depositions, all of the technology utilized performed flawlessly and many innovations in video deposition editing were suggested by Gary to inData’s programmers. All of those suggestions exist today in TrialDirector Suite 4.5.

After two years in trials across the U.S. Gary was promoted to Chief Operations Officer, Trial Consulting Division. A year later, after restructuring at inData, Gary went back into the courtroom until his departure in 2003 when he founded LegalEdge Trial Technology Consulting. Gary maintains a close working relationship with inData Corporation and is a trusted source to augment their own staff of outstanding consultants, or recommend another firm to their clients.

Our team of trial-seasoned professionals know what it takes to create a rock solid product. From basic document scanning and coding to sophisticated deposition video databases encompassing hundreds of deponents, we have the experience to get the job done right. . . the first time. If you find yourself in trial or about to go to trial and your case data is, for whatever reason, not where it should be – we can help pull it all together into a powerful presentation.
Trial Preparation / Presentation / Support

Recently, we have noticed an alarming trend in our industry. Many litigation support and graphics vendors are seeking to get involved in this extremely specialized field of trial support. We commonly find they are exceptionally under-qualified and lack the actual trial experience to perform at any level of adequacy, possibly risking your entire case. Although we provide several services as well, trial-related services are our primary focus.

At LegalEdge, we offer many years of actual trial, arbitration, mediation, and hearing experience, in a variety of litigation areas, and in matters of all sizes. From large-scale jury trials over several months, to one-day hearings, plaintiff or defense, we have been there.

We can engage in whatever capacity desired – from full service support to over-the-shoulder assistance, and anywhere in between. We offer our services at a level you are comfortable with. We have worked on many trials involving several co-counsel firms, all needing to prepare and argue various aspects of the case in court. We are exceptionally experienced and talented in effectively managing several issues simultaneously, treating each as a top priority – a delicate balancing act mastered by few.

Further, as a member of the American Society of Trial Consultants, we are also available to offer objective feedback during the course of the trial which, on many occasions, has proven very beneficial.

Litigation Database Creation / Conversion / Management
LegalEdge offers expert-level experience in several popular litigation database applications including TrialDirector, Summation, Concordance/Opticon, LiveNote and Access. Our staff has a great deal of experience developing and maintaining databases, and has even been involved in the development and upgrade phases. If you are in need of database assistance, we have someone with the talent you are seeking. Long-term and/or ongoing arrangements are available.
E-Discovery and Electronic Document Production

How can digital evidence be discovered and produced in a usable format – in a timely manner – and at a reasonable price? That’s the question facing law firms across the nation. With 93% of business documents existing exclusively in electronic format, digital documents have become an essential ingredient in the discovery process. LegalEdge TTC understands this E-Discovery challenge and has the E-solutions for litigation teams.

LegalEdge TTC works with your firm to discover evidence in email, email attachments, word processing files, spreadsheets, and presentations; seamlessly incorporating it all into your production and litigation software. Our consultants will help you define an E-Discovery strategy to help you cost-effectively filter out insignificant data and expose the evidence that matters.

Elements of an E-Discovery project include but are not limited to the following:

Data Inventory

Determine the scope of an E-Discovery project:

  • Analyze the content of a CD-ROM, hard drive, and various media storage devices
  • Recognize file extensions
  • Determine file sizes
  • Determine number of files located on the media

We can save, print, and even email an itemized report to others in your firm
and provide you an estimate on processing and conversion.

Data Analysis

Once E-Discovery files are secured, we perform initial data analysis to:

  • Eliminate costly duplications
  • Build a database of emails, attachments, and other electronic.
  • Identify and flag files as privileged or non-responsive
  • Cull through documents by keyword, contextual and concept
searches to isolate potential smoking guns

Data Production

We can deliver electronic evidence in the form that you and your clients
desire.

  • Draw information from 500 different file formats and convert to TIFF, or provide in native file format or full-text
  • Data is delivered for input into leading software programs, including
  • Summation®, Concordance®, Opticon™, CaseVault®, iConect™, LextraNet®, Doculex™, DocuMatrix™, and IPRO™
  • All evidence is sequentially numbered with a production or a Bates number
  • Once you’ve isolated the electronic evidence that’s most relevant to your case, our consultants can smoothly integrate that evidence into your trial presentation.

Graphics

“I hear and I forget, I see and I remember…” – Confucius

There is not another form of communication better retained than visual involvement, no
matter how great the speaker. This is certainly true in the courtroom. It should always be
considered that the average juror is not likely familiar with any of the facts surrounding your
case. They must be gradually taught your client’s perspective. Demonstrative graphics,
expertly designed and prepared to train a juror, are both effective and compelling.

We can design, or assist your graphic artist, to develop powerful demonstrative graphics that
clearly communicate your argument to the jury.

Presentations

Effective presentations are a delicate balance of color & content; words & pictures; sights & sounds. Combined with a skilled orator, the correct presentation can communicate your thoughts and ideas to an audience better than any other technique. We work with you, and your personal style, to prepare winning presentations for any venue. Whether a potential new client, arbitration, mediation, opening statement or closing arguments, we can provide you with a powerful multimedia presentation.

What Client’s Say

“You are a true professional in every sense of the word and the best trial technician I have ever had the pleasure of working with. You took the responsibility for obtaining all the hardware for this completely paperless trial and for setting it up, single-handedly, in the courtroom. There was never a glitch. Even more importantly, you operated that equipment in a perfect manner – always completely professional, with calm and confident demeanor. You have a wonderful ability to anticipate the next move of the attorney and are always prepared to call up a document, or highlight a key paragraph, smoothly and effortlessly.”
Gregory C. Read, Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP
“The presentation support services from Gary Puls were “state of the art” and had the court staff standing in amazement with their mouths wide open. I firmly believe that “but for” the video element of the presentation of evidence, the jury would not and could not have reached the decision they did. The tool is – henceforth – a “must” have for any client that has the budget for it. As for Puls, I can not imagine a better fit of personality, temperament and skills. This was a “team effort” and Gary became an integral part of the “team” from the very first moment. His “extra mile” work in working with us preparing the closing argument PowerPoint presentation was a gift from the heavens.”
